Carved Chinese Hongmu Furniture

Hongmu is a dark brown wood, its literal meaning, ‘sourwood’ describes the pungent odor emitted when it is worked. Also known as ‘blackwood’, it was used extensively for the dark heavily carved Qing period furniture (The Qing Dynasty was the last dynasty of China, ruling from 1644 to 1912), no early references to hongmu have yet been discovered.
